Derek Smith: Piper

Started piping in the summer of '69 with the Boy's Brigade, and had a successful solo career in Southern Alberta, while playing with the Calgary Highlanders and Kiwanas Highland Laddies bands in my plooky youth.
Teachers at this time were Steve Kelly, John Whitelock and Alan Walters.
After High School graduation and a summer spent as resident piper at the Banff Springs Hotel, it was off to Vancouver Island where I played with the Mount Arrowsmith band in Parksville.
Due to career and starting a family, a ten year sabbatical ensued, ending when I moved to Victoria and got the urge to start playing again, which led me to the Castle Cary Pipe Band with whom I played for a number of years, becoming Pipe
Sergeant.
Eventually, I moved back to the lower mainland and joined Chilliwack and District in 2000, just in time for our 6th place finish at the Worlds in 2001
and our 3rd place pipe section finish in 2003.
